Throwback Thursday: The First Telephone In Toronto

1879 Telephone
This week, we feature a Cabbagetown (and Toronto) “first”.

In 1879, Alexander Graham Bell created the first telephone exchange in Toronto. The first subscriber among the 40 initial customers, was Hugh Lewis who lived at 295 Carlton St.

Exchange Lane which is located behind the Home Hardware, Shoppers Drug Mart and other Parliament St. stores is named for this historical event.
