The Children’s Book Bank at 350 Berkeley St. will be the beneficiary of the expanding “A Good Book Drive” this year. If you can help, it sounds like a worthy and fun endeavour.
From their site…
A Good Book Drive, an annual book drive to bring stories to a new generation of readers, is expanding to Toronto this year. Since 2012 A Good Book Drive has gathered over 4,500 new books for children in Vancouver, Calgary and Brooklyn.
A Good Book Drive Toronto aims to raise 1,000 books in 29 days and inspire reading and writing skills for the kids that need it most in the city.
Running through the month of February, A Good Book Drive asks Torontonians to purchase a new copy of their favourite kids’ book and deliver it to set locations throughout the city including Type Books, Love Me Do, The Scullery, Tiny Record Shop, and many more. There, donors will be able to personalize their donation with a special bookplate, sharing their own story of why that book is special. By permanently placing those stories within the cover of the books, children will read the personal narratives and learn about the impact of that book on someone else’s life.
All books collected through the month of February will be donated to The Children’s Book Bank, a registered charity that supports childhood literacy by providing free books and literacy support to children in low-income neighbourhoods in Toronto. The Children’s Book Bank opened Canada’s first storefront “book bank” in Regent Park, and offers literacy support programs, including its popular Stories for Students Program, Books Beyond Berkeley Street Program and new B3 (Building Babies’ Brains) program. They are staffed by child literacy experts and knowledgeable volunteers who assist in selecting appropriate books and who provide advice and support on literacy issues.
A Good Book Drive will be sharing images and stories of the books donated in Toronto throughout the month of February at agoodbookdrive.com.
