Event – Toronto Dance Theatre – Rivers
April 25, 2012 - April 28, 2012
A new work by Christopher House set to Rivers, the beloved piano cycle by Canadian composer Ann Southam, played live by virtuoso pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico, with lighting design by Simon Rossiter and set design by internationally acclaimed designer Michael Levine.
Christopher House is collaborating with TDT’s ten dancers to create a fluid and unpredictable counterpoint to the music, reflecting the rushing cascades, luxuriant eddies and attentive stillnesses in the score.
“I imagine a work that celebrates the sweep of the music (joyful, tender, playful, rhapsodic, serene, frenetic), alternating between large-scale, kinetic strokes and intricately-crafted movement conversations. I hope to build a work in which both music and dance retain autonomy yet their marriage feels surprisingly, deliciously inevitable. I want to create a choreography that inspires adventuresome dancing and reveals the vital humanity of the performer.” – Christopher House
