A great photo of the Winchester Hotel as it appeared in 1891 (then known as the Lakeview Hotel). The hotel at the corner of Parliament St. and Winchester St. is one of the more memorable landmarks of Cabbagetown. Consuming a coffee or other intoxicant on the premises as you can today, has a long history going back to 1880 when Winchester Hall was built and 1888 when the hotel was added to the building.
There have been many stories (it was known as the “Bucket of Blood” during the 1920s due to its rough reputation for fights) and changes (whatever happened to the peak on top of the cupola!?) over the years.
