Throwback Thursday: December 10, 1837 – Mackenzie and The Rebels Defeated

On this date, way back in 1837 – the Daily Gleaner reported that the rebels who had been involved in the Upper Canada Rebellion had been defeated.

William Lyon Mackenzie, the first Mayor of Toronto later escaped to the United States after the fighting where he spent a decade with a £1000 reward for his capture hanging over him, before returning and resuming his political career.

Some of the rebels were hanged (Peter Matthews and Samuel Lount who are both buried in the Necropolis) , some were transported to Australia and some pardoned.

William Lyon Mackenzie is also buried in the Necropolis.
