We’re fortunate to have a lively arts scene in the neighbourhood, and its roots go back further than you might think. In his new post, Cabbagetown’s own Gilles Huot of the Cabbagetown Preservation Association, describes many of the early pioneers of opera and ballet who lived in our neighbourhood.
Luigi Von Kunits founded what was to become the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Ernest MacMillan who lived a short walk from the organ at his father’s church at St. Enoch’s Church (now the Toronto Dance Theatre), Betty Oliphant who co-founded the National Ballet School while living on Amelia St., Lotfi Mansouri, Joan Sutherland and Richard Bradshaw are also profiled.
