Modern roadworks and construction are now largely taken care of by machinery, but it was once the case that many tasks used to be completed with human muscle, tenacity and apparently some impressive moustaches.
Here’s a picture from sometime in the 1890s showing some manual labour taking place on Amelia St., looking eastward from Parliament St.
