Streetcar Track Maintenance Rail Grinding – Gerrard Street East (April 29, 30 and May 5)

Our friends at the TTC have given us a heads-up that they’ll be conducting some maintenance on the streetcar tracks on Gerrard Street East on April 29, 30 and May 5. The work will take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. so your beauty sleep might be slightly interrupted. The May 5 “grinding session” (sounds saucy!) is between Parliament St. and River St. and that is the section closest to us in Cabbagetown, but route diversions will occur on all 3 nights.

Here is the notice with further details:

Work description and purpose

As part of its streetcar track maintenance program and state of good repair, TTC will be conducting rail grinding along a number of sections of its streetcar network that developed some rail roughness.

The TTC has obtained a contracted service to provide the rail grinding. This work is intended to improve the current condition of the rail surface which will aid in reducing noise and vibration levels, extend the life of the rail and provide a smoother streetcar operation through those areas.

Work hours
A grinding session in the east end is scheduled on April 29, 30 and May 5. To ensure that this grinding operation is carried out to its optimum potential, the slow moving rail-grinding unit will begin operations from approximately 9 p.m. and will continue until the start of morning streetcar service at approx. 5 a.m.

Grinding activities will generally occur one night on each for each section of street listed in the chart below, weather permitting. A street sweeper will be used to clean the track area each day following grinding operations.

Transit changes
Streetcars will be diverted after 9 p.m. to accommodate the grinding work. A shuttle bus service will provided.

April 29: Streetcars will turn back west at Coxwell loop. A shuttle bus service will provide service between Coxwell Avenue and Main Street Station.
April 30: Eastbound streetcars will divert via: Gerrard, Broadview, Queen, Coxwell and Gerrard to route. Westbound streetcars will divert via: Gerrard, Coxwell, Queen, Parliament and Carlton to route. Shuttle buses will operate between Parliament and Coxwell.
May 5: Streetcars will divert both ways via: Carlton, Parliament, Queen, Broadview and Gerrard to route. Shuttle buses will operate on Gerrard Street between Parliament and Broadview.

Thank you for your patience as we work to improve transit in Toronto.
