SUMMARY:Note from Councillor Pam McConnell - Keep Our Public Libraries Open
DESCRIPTION:Keep Our Public Libraries Open \nAt its last meeting\, the Toronto Public Library Board approved a reduction of $9.9M (5.7%) in its 2012 Operating Budget request through introducing new technologies and cutting over 100 jobs. The Board deferred cutting the remaining $7.3M (4.3%) in service and collection reductions to achieve the requested 10% reduction to their November 21st meeting. \nThe current proposal that is being considered by the Library Board recommend cutting 19\,444 branch hours annually across the City\, including 806 hours in Ward 28. \nThis includes a reduction of 13 hours per week at the Parliament Street Branch\, and 2.5 hours per week at the St. Lawrence Branch. \nThis is a significant service reduction in Ward 28 alone\, but the impact across the City is devastating. Click here to read about the proposed cuts City wide. \nThe Toronto Public Library Board needs to hear from you in the next 10 days about the impact that these proposed cuts will have on you\, your family and your neighbours. Here is how you can make sure that your voice is heard: \n1: Councillor Paula Fletcher (Ward 30) is holding a public consultation meeting in conjunction with the Toronto Public Library this Monday night. Given the close proximity she has generously extended the invitation to Ward 28 residents. I will be in attendance to hear your thoughts as well. \nMonday\, November 14th 7:00 PM Riverdale Branch\, 370 Broadview Avenue. \n2. Send the Board a message outlining your opposition to a further reduction in library services by emailing nmarshall@torontopubliclibrary.ca \n3: Fill out the Toronto Public Library’s survey at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2SRHWHM or under the “What’s New” section of the TPL website. For translation and accessible versions of the survey\, contact Answerline at 416-393-7131 TTY 416-393-7030. The results of this survey will be provided to the Board to inform their decision making on the budget. \nSee the full agenda and board report outlining these budget considerations here. \nPlease come out and share your views on Monday night. I very much look forward to seeing you there. \nPam \nView the online newsletter here:\nhttp://us2.campaign-archive2.com/?u=f1dc60c7c8abbe45ef9c7ea8d&id=f8b9cd1af9&e=b2b34772c1 \n
