Crime alert: Vehicle stolen at Sackville and Spruce Streets

A resident has reported to us that their vehicle was stolen from the neighbourhood on Sunday night. It has been recovered, but with damage. The resident kindly wished to warn others – here is his note:

My car was stolen on Sunday night from the corner of Spruce and Sackville. The police found it Tuesday, abandoned near Yonge and Davisville, and I’m going to the police lot to pick it up [Thursday] and have it towed to the insurance company-assigned body shop. I have not seen the damage yet, but the police say the door lock was “punched” and the ignition lock destroyed. The car likely targeted because it’s an old 2000 Volkswagen and thus easier to steal due to lack of modern ignition immobilizers. I like to keep my cars spotless on the inside, so there was not a single item visible beyond my iPhone cable in the charger.

We often see shady looking individuals standing on the corner of Sackville and Spruce, usually in daylight hours, and then a car comes down the street and gives the person something, I assume a drug deal is occurring. It would not surprise me if one of these guys was the car thief.

I recommend warning owners of older cars to keep an eye out, and to get a Club or other anti-theft device.

Update:
The resident updated us that after identifying his vehicle, he found no additional damage other than to the keyhole on the door and the ignition key and that the thieves had smoked in the car leaving ash in the ashtray.
