One of the top concerns expressed by residents in our recent survey, was with neighbours not clearing snow and ice from their sidewalks as required by City by-law.
The fine for not clearing snow or ice within this period is $125.
The recent severe weather and low temperatures have made clearing the accumulated ice very difficult, and the only solutions were chipping at the ice or sprinkling sand/grit/kitty litter on top of the ice to provide some traction. However, now that local stores are stocking melting-salt again and temperatures are rising to the range where salt is effective again, we encourage residents to make their sidewalks safe and accessible as soon as possible.
If someone in your area is not clearing their snow or ice, we recommend that you speak with them directly to find out why. Please help elderly or incapacitated neighbours to clear their sidewalks or contact the City (call 311) to ask that they be put on the list to be assisted in the future.
If you wish to complain to the City about a neighbour not clearing their sidewalks, complaints can be made by calling 311 or visiting their website at: http://www.toronto.ca/311/.
